Senior leaders do not need a longer dashboard. They need a concise explanation of what is changing, why it matters and what decision or action follows. Metrics become useful when they connect activity to a business, reputational or operational objective.
Choose metrics that answer a management question
Before presenting a number, ask what it is intended to inform. Reach may be relevant when awareness is the objective. Comprehension and behavior are more relevant when an organization needs employees or customers to act differently.
A useful executive view
Outcome: the result or change that the initiative is expected to influence.
Signal: the leading indicator that shows whether progress is occurring.
Context: the benchmark, trend or external event required to interpret the number.
Decision: the action recommended in response to the evidence.
Posts, impressions, meetings and media clips describe effort. Leadership reports should distinguish execution data from indicators that show an effect on understanding, behavior, preference, risk or trust.
